The Chosen One
“Every year we go through this,” Adam said. “I’m not gonna do it. It’s just wrong.”
His friend sighed. He looked around to make sure no one was eavesdropping. They were sitting at a Starbucks, sharing a cup of coffee as they often did. Perhaps – obviously – this wasn’t the best place to talk about this. But Victor, Adam’s best friend since high school, was running out of time.
“We have to,” Victor said. He lowered his voice and leaned in a little. “Come on, what are you worried about?”
“Uh, you know exactly what I’m worried about. Would you do it if I was in your position?”
“But that’s my point. You’re not in my position. I am. And if we don’t do it this year… it’ll be too late for me. For the both of us.”
Adam rolled his eyes and shook his head. He finished downing the last of his coffee.
“You sure I can’t change your mind?” Victor asked.
“I’m sorry man. The answer’s no,” said Adam.
Victor slowly shook his head. “I understand. I’m sorry it has to be this way…”
“Can’t you find…” Adam seemed a little dizzy for a sec. “Can’t you find somebody…” His head was spinning. “Whoa.”
Victor watched patiently.
“I mean… there’s gotta be somebody else who… um… Wow, I don’t feel so… so…”
“Come on, let’s get you to the car,” Victor said.
“Y…yeah,” Adam said, groggily rubbing his face.
Victor got up and put his arm around Adam. “Easy there, steady boy…”
Adam limply got up from the table. His legs suddenly feeling like jello. His muscles… all his muscles… suddenly felt so weak and limp.
“I got you,” Victor said. He helped carry Adam out of the store.
They limped towards Victor’s car, parked right outside.
He could barely walk. Barely stand. He could feel his strength rapidly leaking from his body… Feeling heavier and heavier… Weaker and weaker. Tired… so, so tired…
“I’m sorry,” he managed to say. “I don’t know… I don’t know what’s come over me all of… the sudden…”
“Maybe it was something you drank,” Victor said.
“What?” Adam remarked, using what little strength he had to turn his face up towards Victor. “You… you drugged me?”
With his free hand, Victor remote unlocked his car and popped open the rear door. “In you go,” he said, dumping the limp Adam into the back seat.
“Vic…tor… No…..”
Victor closed the car door.
“Victor!!!” Adam screamed, feeling more and more tired. Now it was a struggle to even stay awake!
Victor sat in the driver’s seat, closed his door – and with a push of a button locked every door in the car – and inserted his key into the ignition.
“Please, Vic… I can’t… You can’t… do… to me…” And Adam’s heavy eyelids couldn’t hold open any longer, and he helplessly, unavoidably, finally fell deep asleep.
“I’m sorry, Adam. This was the only way.”
